Growth of the Baptists in America

A period of widespread growth for the Baptists took place during and following what is know as the First Great Awakening which centered around the popular and powerful preaching of Anglican evangelist George Whitfield. By the year 1790 Baptists numbered around 65,000 and the next twenty years they more than doubled this number (173,000). There were about 28 million in the 1980s.
